What does a digital analyst do?

In this episode of Datadrivet, Joni Lindgren and Jasmin Yaya look at the digital analyst role, a job that goes by several names: digital analyst, web analyst, app analyst. The titles vary, but the work is the same.

The starting point is that an analyst has access to people’s behavior inside an interface, except it never arrives as people. It arrives as numbers in tables. So the real skill is interpretation: reading those numbers and working out what they actually mean about how users move through the product. That means knowing the interface itself well enough to connect a number back to a screen, a step, or a moment where something went wrong.

The hosts describe the analyst as the user’s best friend. Over time, by watching the behavior closely, the analyst builds an intuition for where users struggle and what they are trying to do. From that, the ideas for improvement come.

But spotting the problem is only half the job. The analyst then has to take it to the right person: a product owner, a copywriter, a UX designer, or a developer, depending on what the fix needs. The episode is clear that a good analyst works across team boundaries rather than handing a report over the wall. If you find a problem and it never reaches the person who can solve it, the analysis did not do its job.

The takeaway is that a digital analyst is part detective, part translator, part connector. The numbers are only useful once someone turns them into a clear problem and gets it in front of the people who can act.
